Most of the products I use regularly are not especially exciting. They have plain packaging and make fairly modest promises. They are also the things I notice most when I stop using them.
At 42, I am much more interested in products that make everyday maintenance easier. A good routine depends on the small things you can repeat without giving them much thought. These are the unglamorous products that have earned a permanent place in mine.
Think of this as the practical side of my glow-up routine. Every product here has been used enough to become ordinary, which is exactly why it made the list.

Cocofloss has been my go-to for years. It is a woven floss with a thicker texture, so it feels as though it is actually picking up what is between my teeth. I notice a real difference compared with the thin, waxy flosses.
It costs more than standard drugstore floss, but I use it consistently and prefer the result. That makes it an easy repeat purchase for me.
A stainless-steel tongue scraper is one of the least expensive things in my oral-care routine and one of the most effective. It removes the coating that brushing alone can leave behind, and my mouth feels much cleaner after I use it.
I prefer stainless steel because it is easy to rinse and lasts for years. You can find a simple one on Amazon. Use a light hand; a few passes are plenty.
I am big on oral hygiene, and TheraBreath Mild Mint is the mouthwash I actually want to use. It is alcohol-free and mild. It leaves my mouth feeling fresh without the strong burn of many mouthwashes.
I use it at the end of my regular oral-care routine. The mild flavor is the reason I stay consistent with it.
Kerasal Intensive Foot Repair is what I use when my heels get dry. The Kerasal one contains urea and salicylic acid to help soften rough skin, and it works better for me than the urea cream in a white tub everyone’s buying.
I apply it before bed and wear cotton socks over it overnight. The product works best when I use it consistently. A few nights in a row makes more difference than remembering it once before a pedicure.
Mighty Patch Original is what I reach for when a blemish has come to a head. The hydrocolloid patch absorbs fluid and keeps me from touching the area, which is often half the battle.
I apply one to clean, dry skin before bed. These are most useful for surface blemishes. For those, they are simple and effective….and kind of addictive to use.
Creatine is one of the few supplements I can tell I am not taking consistently. I use plain creatine monohydrate because it supports strength and muscle performance. There is also promising research around cognitive benefits, which becomes more interesting to me as I get older.
I take 5 grams each day and do not worry much about timing. Consistency is what matters, and I can feel the difference when I let the habit lapse.
The one I use: Thorne Creatine because it’s NSF certified. If you want a clean backup recommendation, Naked Creatine is a good, affordable one.
Magnesium glycinate is part of my evening routine. I find it relaxing, and I sleep better when I take it consistently. The glycinate form also tends to be easier on my stomach than some other forms of magnesium.
I check the amount of elemental magnesium on the label because that is the number that reflects the actual dose.
The one I use: Pure Encapsulations Magnesium Glycinate.
Years ago my naturopath recommended a small dose of melatonin in the evening to alieviet work anxiety and it works for me.
I take 2 to 3 milligrams of melatonin every night. It is especially helpful when I feel wound up because it helps me settle down and makes the transition to sleep easier.
The one I use: Natrol Melatonin (3mg). It comes in 1mg-5mg so you can get what works for you.
For a relaxing bath, I buy the plain fragrance-free Dr. Teal’s Epsom salt and use whichever body wash I am in the mood for.
There is nothing elaborate about it. It simply makes a warm bath feel more relaxing and helps alleviate sore muscles, and I always keep a bag in the bathroom.
I wear blue-light glasses in the evening when I am still on my computer or phone. They reduce some blue-light exposure and, for me, help signal that the day is winding down.
I also dim my screen at night. The glasses are inexpensive and easy to keep near my computer, so I actually remember to use them.
The pair I use: Blue Light Glasses.
Seriously wish I would’ve starting wearing these UPF gloves in my 20s and 30s. I now keep them in my car at all times!
These are great for protecting the backs of the hands during regular driving or if you’re at your gel mani appointment.
Aquaphor is an obvious addition to a list of practical products, but I suspect most people are only using it for dry lips.
I use it throughout my beauty routine whenever my skin needs extra moisture or protection. Here is exactly how I use it and why I always keep a tube nearby.
None of these unsexy beauty products are going to transform your routine overnight. They make the everyday parts of taking care of yourself easier, which is usually where the visible difference comes from over time.
They have all passed my personal test: I use them consistently and notice when they are missing.
