I Spent Over $700 On Omnilux LED Masks: Was It Worth It?

In this Omnilux LED mask review, I’ll break down the science behind these masks and whether the investment was worth it.

Does Omnilux Really Work?

Around 25 years ago, I got a bad sunburn on my chest and shoulders.

I tried the whole IPL thing—five rounds of it. Spoiler alert: zero improvement. And, I got a little tired of schlepping to all the medspa visits with no payoff.

Enter the LED red light therapy trend, specifically the face masks. These devices are everywhere, including the Omnilux masks.

These red light masks promise to increase collagen, reduce wrinkles, and reduce age spots all without leaving your home.

So I started researching, only to realize these things come with a hefty price tag.

What’s the big deal, and do I really need to take out a loan for better skin?

Well, it turns out, yeah— it’s worth splurging on the good ones, and that’s exactly what I did.

I shelled out $700 for the Omnilux Contour Face Mask and the Omnilux Neck and Chest Mask.

We’ll call it an investment.

What is LED Light Therapy?

LED light therapy uses special lights called “Light Emitting Diodes” (LEDs) to send light into your skin.

These lights go under your skin and make your cells produce more collagen, which reduces wrinkles and gives your skin a healthy glow.

In the 1980s and 1990s, scientists found that red and near-infrared light, like the light in the Omnilux mask, can help heal tissues and wounds.

Fast-forward to today, and LED red light masks are all over the beauty scene, promising anti-aging benefits and clear skin.

How Does Red LED Light Contribute To Anti-Aging?

When our skin absorbs red light, it makes more collagen and elastin, which keep it firm and elastic.

Collagen and elastin are important proteins for firm and bouncy skin. As we age, our skin makes less collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles and sagging.

LED promotes cellular turnover and helps improve the skin’s overall texture and tone. Red light also helps reduce inflammation, a common cause of skin aging.

Red light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that doesn’t irritate the skin or cause damage. It enhances collagen without needing recovery from treatments like retinol, microneedling, or peels.

What Do I Need to Know About the LED Wavelengths and Lights?

Not all lights are the same.

Different masks or devices have specific functions for skincare needs. The red ones can go deep into the skin and activate important processes that increase collagen and elastin.

Medical offices use red light to boost collagen and elastin production in cells.

These devices have several lights emitting different wavelengths to treat skin problems.

Devices like the Omnilux are great because they come close and conveniently offer the same anti-aging benefits.

Red Light for Face Wavelengths

LED Light Breakdown

Blue light, with wavelengths of 405-420nm, can effectively treat acne by targeting pore bacteria. Although acne wasn’t my specific concern, I was looking for red and infrared.

Red light, usually between 620 and 700nm, can boost collagen production. This helps make the skin smoother, firmer, and less pigmented. (Yes, please!)

Infrared – the wavelength with the deepest penetration (700-1400nm). Infrared stimulates fibroblasts, which produce collagen and elastin, which gives us youthful-looking skin.

The Omnilux masks feature red and infrared lights to improve collagen and elastin.

Why I Purchased the Omnilux LED Mask vs. Other Devices on the Market

It all comes down to those LED wavelengths, and many LED masks don’t use the right wavelength to reach the skin, so it’s like shining a flashlight on your face.

Omnilux uses LED lights with wavelengths from 633nm to 830nm for optimal anti-aging benefits. These wavelengths have been tested and proven effective.

In addition to the correct wavelengths, I wanted a red light device that was:

  • FDA cleared
  • Easy to use and hands-free
  • Flexible fit (I have a small face, and masks never fit right)
  • 10 min or under session time
  • High bulb count for maximum coverage: The Omnilux Contour Mask has 66 LED bulbs, each with two lights, for a total of 132 LED lights.
  • Ability to use on my chest/decollete area because that’s where I had a lot of old sun and age spots
  • Researched and clinically tested

Many popular masks, including CurrentBody, Dr. Dennis Gross, and Higher Dose, have great reviews, but I chose the Omnilux LED mask because of the high bulb count and flexible fit.

LED Light Therapy Data

Here’s why I’m such an advocate for Omnilux and red light therapy: the data!

Before purchasing, I did my homework and found several studies showing how effective red light therapy can be.

My Omnilux LED Mask Routine

I used the Omnilux Contour Face Mask and the Omnilux Neck and Chest Mask three to four days a week for six months, combining them with my usual skincare routine.

In the final couple of months of reviewing, I used the Omnilux masks for 20 minutes each session (double the time), and this was around the time I received several compliments on my skin.

Omnilux Neck

Something to note: Omnilux recommends using the masks on a clean/dry face without any skincare. They specifically state on their website:

“We recommend completing treatments with a bare face, or using the specially formulated and designed Omnilux Hydrogel masks under your device. You don’t want to create a barrier between your skin and the light with any unauthorized products. If additional hydration is desired during treatment, a light water-based serum is okay. Any other products could impact the amount of light reaching the skin and reduce effectiveness, could possibly cause a skin reaction, or may damage the Contour device itself.”

I like to apply my skincare right after a shower, so I take my morning shower and sometimes use a water-based serum before using the Omnilux masks.

Omnilux LED Mask Results

Here are my Omnilux before and after results. I was trying to target the chest area where I had a lot of sun damage. I definitely see a slight improvement in the pigmentation of the spots.

Omnilux Before and After Sun Damage

Omnilux LED Mask Review

Pros:

  • Clinically proven: Clinical studies have proven that Omnilux devices are effective
  • Flexible Fit: The mask was comfortable and sat close to my skin.
  • Easy to Use: I can sit back and scroll TikTok or multi-task.

Cons:

  • Velcro straps can get caught in my hair: I now just use the top strap and hold the bottom portion of the mask with my hand.
  • Not compatible with retinol: You can’t use your prescription strength retinol! I didn’t realize this until I started using it, but Omnilux advises Retin A or tretinoin users against using light devices. I DO use a lower prescription Retin A about 1x a week and try to space my red light treatments out.

Final Verdict: Would I Repurchase the Omnilux LEDMask if it Broke Tomorrow?

Absolutely, without a second thought.

Unlike my Miccorcurrent Nuface device or other devices that require active movement across my face/body, the Omnilux mask allows me to relax or multitask.

Plus, the evidence supporting LED red light therapy is compelling.

I’m eagerly anticipating the release of the Omnilux body, and I would be the first to buy it.

Whenever I find myself straying from my routine, I revisit the latest LED red light research. It’s enough to motivate me to get back on track.

Is The Omnilux Mask Worth It?

I 100% recommend the Omnilux Contour Mask and the Neck and Chest Mask if you can commit to using it 3-5 days a week. The data behind it is just too compelling.

But, like with any skincare regime, consistency is key, and I find the Omnilux masks easy to use and incorporate into my routine.
