The HairMax LaserBand isn’t cheap, but by your 40s, changes in hair thickness are pretty common and can be frustrating to deal with.
My hair has always been naturally thin, and while I wouldn’t label it as “hair loss” per se, turning 40 has made me more aware of a gradual decrease in the fullness and bounce of my hair over the years.
I’ve tried oils and serums, but they always leave my fine hair looking greasy—not exactly the vibe I’m going for.
After a recent online shopping spree on a quest to buy the perfect clip-in hair extensions, $600 later, I gave up. It was too much of a hassle for me, and none of them looked right.
My pricy endeavor got me thinking…could adding a laser to my routine help?
How Does The HairMax LaserBand Help With Hair Growth?
The LaserBand devices are at-home, FDA-cleared medical laser devices that claim to stimulate hair growth, reverse thinning, and restore the hair growth cycle to increase density and fullness.
They use laser diodes, instead of LED lights, to direct light and penetrate the scalp to reach your follicles, unlike LED light, which is not focused.
In other words, the HairMax lasers directly send targeted messages straight to your hair follicle, while LED lights are more like diffused lights that don’t know exactly where to go.
So, if you’re considering using your red light LED face mask on your scalp, you’re out of luck – unfortunately, it’s not the same.
HairMax LaserBand 41 vs. HairMax LaserBand 82
HairMax offers two models – the LaserBand 41 and LaserBand 82 that provide full scalp coverage, but the primary difference is the number of lasers in each band.
The LaserBand 41 has lasers that penetrate your scale to energize hair follicles and stimulate hair growth to reverse the thinning process.
The LaserBand 82 offers more coverage and a shorter treatment time (90 seconds vs. 3 minutes) and comes in at $799 vs. $549 for the LaserBand 41.
Because they used the same technology and there wasn’t one more “advanced” than the other, I opted to save some cash and purchased the LaserBand 41.
How to Use the HairMax LaserBand
Starting at the front hairline, gradually pass the LaserBand over your scalp. The “teeth” will naturally help part your hair, and the LaserBand will buzz every thirty seconds, prompting you to move sections.
Total treatment time takes just a few minutes.
HairMax recommends using the LaserBand three days a week and for maintenance as needed after you achieve the desired results.
The ease of use and short treatment time make this an easy weekly addition to my self-care routine.
I usually pop it while putting on makeup or brushing my teeth – I sometimes wear it for 5+ minutes and have been routinely targeting my temple area, where my hair is the thinnest.
Does The LaserBand Work? When Will I See Results?
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) clinical studies, yes!
In a randomized series of trials of 26 weeks, subjects showed a significant increase in the number of hairs on their scalp when using the low-level laser device compared to those using a fake device.
According to HairMax, most will see results in 3-4 months with consistent use three times a week.
I am okay with playing the long game and knew results would take time.
HairMax LaserBand 41 Review
About two months in, I noticed tiny baby hairs at the front of my hairline, so I was motivated to continue using it.
I definitely noticed some regrowth, but I wouldn’t say there has been any significant difference in my overall hair fullness – I anticipate that will take some time.
I have also recently started adding the Nioxin System 3 Scalp & Hair Leave-In Treatment to amp up the results. It’s nice because it doesn’t feel oily or heavy at all.
HairMax LaserBand Pros:
- Researched back with clinical studies showing the efficacy of the devices:
- Super easy to use – wear it like a headband and slide it through your hair for a few minutes three times a week, and you’re done
HairMax LaserBand Cons:
- Price: A splurge-worthy buy. This is an investment at $549 for the LaserBand 41 and $799 (!) for the LaserBand 82. Tip: Try the Hairmax LaserComb, which costs $199 and uses the same technology.
Final Thoughts on the HairMax LaserBand
If you’re starting to notice hair thinning or just want to stay ahead of it, the LaserBand is worth considering. It’s super easy to use, and the best part? No messy oils or serums that leave my hair greasy for days.
Because I saw subtle results early, I’m a fan and look forward to the long-term results.
As with any at-home device, consistency is key – I use a self-care tracker to ensure I’m using my LaserBand at least 3 days a week.
Favorite Hair Growth Products & Routine
Keeping my fine hair looking thick and full takes some effort, but I’ve found a routine that works (oils are a no-go for me, and yes, the Dyson Airwrap was a flop too).
Three times a week, I use the HairMax LaserBand along with Nioxin treatment. Every day, I grab my Mason Pearson brush and a scalp massager to really focus on brushing—it’s an investment, but honestly, it feels so luxurious.
Once a week, I’ll do a deep conditioner or leave-in treatment and follow up with a good clarifying shampoo to keep my hair light and free from buildup.
And let’s not forget the Slip silk pillowcase at night. Worth it.
